Sharing real-world tourism experiences, inspiring future industry leaders, and strengthening the next generation of tourism entrepreneurs.

Last week, ABCD Concepts proudly continued its involvement in the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), with our Director, Buntu Matole, representing the business for the fifth consecutive year.

The programme brought together third-year students studying Tourism and Hospitality, creating an opportunity to connect academic learning with the realities of running a tourism business. The engagement consisted of a two-day online webinar, followed by a two-day in-person bootcamp at UJ, allowing students to explore entrepreneurship through practical insights, industry experiences, and meaningful discussions.

Bringing Tourism Entrepreneurship into the Classroom

For ABCD Concepts, participating in the academy is about more than sharing business knowledge. It is an opportunity to demonstrate how tourism can become a vehicle for entrepreneurship, community development, and inclusive economic participation.

Drawing on his experience of building ABCD Concepts since 2015, Buntu shared insights into the opportunities and challenges of operating a tourism business, developing authentic cultural experiences, building relationships with local entrepreneurs, and creating opportunities for communities that have historically been overlooked by mainstream tourism.

Through our work in Khayelitsha and Langa, we have seen how tourism can connect visitors with local stories, businesses, culture, and everyday life while creating economic opportunities for community members.

These experiences offer students a practical perspective on the industry, encouraging them to think beyond traditional tourism models and recognise the potential of locally rooted, community-driven tourism businesses.

Connecting Academic Learning with Industry Experience

The combination of online learning and the in-person bootcamp provided students with an opportunity to engage with entrepreneurship from different perspectives. It created space to explore business ideas, discuss the realities of the tourism and hospitality sectors, and consider how innovation and practical problem-solving can contribute to building sustainable businesses.

For emerging tourism professionals, exposure to entrepreneurs working directly within communities is particularly valuable. It demonstrates that building a successful tourism business requires more than a good idea; it also demands resilience, adaptability, strategic thinking, relationship-building, and a commitment to delivering quality experiences.

Five Consecutive Years of Knowledge Sharing and Impact

Our continued participation in the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy reflects ABCD Concepts’ commitment to supporting education, knowledge sharing, and the development of future tourism entrepreneurs.

As a business that has navigated the realities of entrepreneurship over the past decade, we understand the importance of sharing lessons learned along the way. By engaging with students at UJ, we contribute to conversations about the future of tourism and encourage young people to recognise the opportunities available within the industry.

We are grateful for the continued opportunity to participate in this initiative and engage with students who will help shape the future of tourism and hospitality in South Africa.

At ABCD Concepts, we believe that the future of tourism depends not only on the destinations we promote, but also on the people we empower, the businesses we support, and the opportunities we create for the next generation.
